2-day Sahara tour from Marrakech:

Best 2-day desert tour Marrakech

Day 1:Marrakech ➝ High Atlas Mountains ➝ Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah ➝ Ouarzazate ➝ Daraa Valley ➝ Agdz ➝ Zagora (Approx. 8 Hours’ Drive)

The first day of your 2-day Marrakech to Zagora desert tour begins with a pickup from your accommodation by one of our native drivers at Africa North Journeys. We start the journey toward the Zagora Desert, passing through stunning landscapes that will leave you amazed. As we cross the High Atlas Mountains, we make a short stop at the Tizi N’Tichka Pass, standing at 2,260 meters above sea level, to enjoy breathtaking mountain views. We then continue to the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, one of Morocco’s oldest fortified villages, dating back to the 11th century. While exploring the kasbah, you’ll discover its intricate architecture and rich history. This iconic site has served as a filming location for many famous movies, including Gladiator, The Mummy, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia.

After your visit, we stop for lunch before heading toward Ouarzazate, whose Berber name means “noiseless.” Known today as the Hollywood of Africa, this city was once a simple military post and has now become one of Morocco’s most visited film destinations. Next, we continue driving toward Zagora, passing through Berber villages and the beautiful Daraa Valley, the largest oasis in Morocco and home to the country’s longest river, stretching over 1,100 km. By afternoon, we arrive in the Zagora Desert, where your camels will be waiting for a memorable ride across the dunes. We stop to admire a magical Sahara sunset before continuing on to your desert camp. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a warm cup of mint tea and enjoy a traditional dinner. Later, relax to the rhythm of Berber drum music and enjoy the peaceful desert night before heading to sleep.

Day 2:Zagora Desert ➝ Daraa Valley ➝ Ouarzazate ➝ High Atlas Mountains ➝ Marrakech (Approx. 8 Hours’ Drive)

On the second day of your 2-day Marrakech Desert trip, your morning begins with an early wake-up to witness the magical sunrise in front of your desert camp. After packing your luggage and enjoying breakfast, you will mount your camel and ride back to the village, where your driver-guide will be waiting. Once reunited, we begin the journey back to Marrakech, passing through charming villages, beautiful landscapes, and several scenic viewpoints. On the way, we make a stop in Ouarzazate to visit the historic Taourirt Kasbah, whose name means “the hill” in Berber.

During the French colonial period, this kasbah belonged to the powerful Glaoui family. Sadly, the structure was heavily damaged during the earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023, but it still remains an important historical site. After a photo stop, we continue driving through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi N’Tichka Pass once again. By late afternoon, we arrive in Marrakech, where we will drop you off at your accommodation, marking the end of your 2-day Marrakech to Zagora desert tour.

If you prefer to visit the Merzouga Desert instead of Zagora, we highly recommend our 2 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. Alternatively, if you would like to end the tour in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech, we suggest the 2 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour. However, if you feel that a 2-day desert trip is too rushed and that most of the time will be spent driving, and you would prefer a longer and more relaxed experience, then we recommend our 3 Days Marrakech to Sahara Desert, as well as the 4 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech for a deeper and more enjoyable journey.

Things to Know Before Your Trip:

Know Before You Go

Travel Documents

Make sure you bring all required travel documents, including a valid passport and any necessary visas for Morocco. Some nationalities may require additional permits, so it’s always best to check current entry regulations before your trip. Keeping digital backups of your documents on your phone is helpful in case of loss and makes hotel check-ins smoother.

Clothing & Essentials

Morocco’s landscapes vary widely, so pack clothing suitable for changing temperatures. Comfortable, breathable outfits are ideal for daytime, while evenings—especially in desert or mountain regions—can be much colder. Bring essential items such as sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and reliable walking shoes. A small backpack is useful for carrying your belongings during daily activities.

Weather Conditions

Weather conditions differ greatly from one region to another. Desert areas are hot during the day but cool at night, while mountain regions can be cold even in summer. Checking the weather forecast before your tour will help you pack properly and stay comfortable throughout your journey.

Hydration & Snacks

Staying hydrated is important, especially during longer drives or outdoor activities. We recommend carrying bottled water and light snacks such as fruit or energy bars. Your guide will make regular stops at cafés and local shops where you can purchase refreshments and discover local flavors.

Health & Safety

Your safety is our top priority. Our guides are experienced professionals who provide assistance and advice throughout your journey. If you have medical conditions or mobility concerns, please let us know in advance so we can adapt your tour accordingly. Following your guide’s instructions during activities ensures a safe and enjoyable experience.

Photography

Morocco offers endless photo opportunities, from desert dunes to ancient kasbahs. You are welcome to take photos, but always ask permission before photographing people. To avoid running out of battery during long days, we recommend bringing a portable charger or power bank, as some remote areas have limited electricity access.

Cash & Payments

While credit cards are accepted in many cities, smaller villages and rural areas often operate on a cash-only basis. Carrying Moroccan dirhams (MAD) is recommended for small purchases, tips, and personal expenses. ATMs are available in most cities, but less common in remote areas, so withdrawing cash beforehand is helpful.

Respect Local Culture

Morocco is a culturally rich and welcoming country. When visiting traditional villages, religious sites, or rural areas, modest clothing is appreciated. Your guide will explain local customs and etiquette to help you interact respectfully. Learning a few basic Arabic words like “Salam” (hello) and “Shukran” (thank you) can enhance your experience.

Transportation Comfort

All our tours use modern, air-conditioned vehicles designed for comfort during short and long journeys. Throughout the drive, your guide will arrange regular breaks for restrooms, stretching, photos, and snacks. Our vehicles are maintained to high safety standards to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Flexibility & Personalization

We understand that every traveler has different interests. Our tours are designed to be flexible, allowing you to adjust timing, add optional stops, or personalize parts of the itinerary. Simply let your guide know your preferences, and we will do our best to make your experience memorable and tailored to your needs.
